Our goal
We are working to make this website meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. That is a goal and a way of working, not a claim that every page already meets every requirement. The checks described here are our own; they are not an independent audit.
What we have tested
The key pages (home, services, a service page, request a proposal, contact, the roofing estimate, the blog and an article, and government contracting) were tested with automated and manual checks at screen widths from 320 to 1440 pixels:
- Automated checks with axe-core for WCAG 2.0 and 2.1 levels A and AA, with no violations reported on those pages.
- Keyboard use only: tab order, a visible focus indicator, a skip link, and the mobile menu and drop-down menus opening and closing with Escape and returning focus.
- Zoom to 200% and reflow at a 320 pixel width, without sideways scrolling.
- Increased text spacing (line height, letter, word and paragraph spacing) without text being cut off.
- Forms: every field has a label, errors are described next to the field, marked invalid, announced, and focus moves to the first field that needs attention.
- Text contrast over photographs, measured on the rendered pages, and the setting for reduced motion.
Settings you can change
The “Aa” button in the header of every public page, and “Accessibility settings” at the bottom of the page, open the same controls:
- Text size, in steps up to 200%.
- High contrast.
- Reduce animations.
- Increase text spacing: taller lines, and more space between letters, words and paragraphs.
- Readable font: a more legible typeface from your own device, so nothing is downloaded.
- Underline links.
- Reset, which clears all of the above.
The settings are saved in your browser only, and the site works the same if your browser does not allow storage. The site also follows your device settings for more contrast and reduced motion. With larger text or more spacing, the header switches to the menu button so that everything fits.
Known limitations
- We have not yet tested with real screen readers such as NVDA, JAWS or VoiceOver. This is planned, and until it is done we cannot say how every page sounds in each of them.
- Only Chromium-based browsers have been tested so far. Safari, Firefox and mobile browsers are still to be checked.
- The roof estimator shows a satellite picture of the roof for reference. Nothing in it needs a pointer: you type the property address, choose a material and fill in a form, and the results are written as text.
- Photographs on the site are illustrative stock images with short descriptions. Map imagery comes from a third-party provider.
- The capability statement PDF and other linked documents have not been checked for accessibility. Ask us and we will send the information in another form.
- The tables in blog articles have not been checked with a screen reader.
